Open, bright, happy, and blue

As one of the country's largest agricultural municipalities, and with a background as a city and trading place as early as the middle of the 19th century, Steinkjer has a long history and beautiful cultural landscape close to the city center. These are qualities that should help shape the city's character together with a clear identity as a green, vibrant, active, cultural and future-oriented rural town. As a center in Trøndelag. This will make Steinkjer attractive to residents, newcomers, visitors and passers-by alike.

An inclusive, innovative and robust plan.

The plan proposes to re-identify Steinkjer as a river delta, establish new economic opportunities and strengthen city life through a sensitive and landscape-based approach for everyone who lives, works and visits Steinkjer.

We want Steinkjer to use its landscape, embrace its history and be proud of the exciting future the city has to face. This study is not about drawing Steinkjer's next city plan, but to reveal potentials on several levels that will be brought to the city and the public. It is important to give the local population ownership in the development of Steinkjer's city centre plan through participation. As a team greatly appreciated the input from local enthusiasts and user groups in the process in the parallel assignment. All input has been fundamental to the design of Steinkjer Deltaby.

Strategy & vision

The project proposes several strategies under the umbrella of a vision for the city. We believe that Steinkjer Deltabyen can become an international model project. Our focus for this assignment has been to look at the potential for densification of the city center. This is not only a proposal that looks at where Steinkjer can grow, but also how it can be shaped over time. For this, we have had a landscape-based approach that acts as a framework within which the city can grow. Within the master plan, we propose new public spaces along the fjord, renewal of existing public spaces, a new mobility strategy, location of the new county's house, several transformation projects and a new park system with space for a showcase for Norwegian agriculture. An overall vision where Steinkjer can rediscover its relationship with, and requalify its ownership, of the fjord.

We wish for Steinkjer to utilise its landscape, embrace its history, and take pride in its exciting future. This study is not about drawing Steinkjer’s next city plan, but revealing potentials on multiple levels to be brought to the city and the public.
